Dieser Artikel untersucht anhand von historischen Arzneibüchern, medizinischen Schriften, Rezepturen und modernen Fachliteraturen systematisch die historische Entwicklung des chinesischen Arzneimittels Baiwei in Bezug auf Name, botanische Herkunft, wissenschaftliche Bezeichnung, Anbaugebiete, Qualitätsbewertung, Ernte, Verarbeitung, Geschmack, Meridiane sowie Wirkungen und Anwendungsgebiete. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass Baiwei in den klassischen Arzneibüchern meist als korrekter Name verwendet wird, daneben auch als „Chuncao“, „Popozhenxianbao“ und „Longdan Baiwei“. Die Hauptquelle sind die Wurzeln und Rhizome der Pflanze Cynanchum atratum aus der Familie der Hundsgiftgewächse. Die hauptsächlichen Anbaugebiete umfassen die Provinzen Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shaanxi und Shanxi; seit der späten Ming-Dynastie werden vor allem die Produkte aus Ju, Yishui und Rizhao in Shandong geschätzt und als authentisch („Dong Baiwei“) angesehen. In puncto Arzneieigenschaften gilt Baiwei als bitter, salzig, ungiftig; vor der Qing-Dynastie als sehr kalt, danach als kalt. Meridianzugehörigkeiten wurden erst ab der Qing-Dynastie vermerkt, hier zum Lungenmeridian; heute hauptsächlich Magen-, Leber- und Nierenmeridiane. Die Hauptwirkungen sind Hitze klären, harntreibend, Yin sowie Essenz nähren; indiziert bei syndromen durch Yin-Mangel-Hitze. Auf Grundlage der Untersuchung wird empfohlen, Baiwei aus Cynanchum atratum der Familie Hundsgiftgewächse als Arzneiprüfstoff zu verwenden, getrocknete Wurzeln und Rhizome einzusetzen, bei fehlender Verarbeitungsangabe die Rohware zu verwenden und bei spezifischen Anforderungen die vorgeschriebene Zubereitung einzuhalten.
