Objective: To observe the influence of Bushen Huatan decoction on tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) and interleukin-6(IL-6) in ovariectomized rats and to explore the therapeutic mechanism of the drugs. Method: Female SD rats were divided into five groups:model group(A)

sham operation group(B)

livial group(C)

Bushen Huatan decoction low dose group(D) and high dose group(E). Except for group B

all rats were ovariectomized. Drug treatment began at three months after the operation. Group C was treated with livial at the dose 0.23 mg· kg-1

group D and E were treated with the low dose 9.4 g· kg-1 the large dose 18.8 g· kg-1 and Bushen Huatan decoction respectively A

B group recewed the same volume of physiological saline. After 8 weeks intragastric administration by once a day

the rat's bone mineral density was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptionmetry. Levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in bone tissue were determined by using immunohistoehemistry techniques. Result: Bushen Huatan decoction can evidently increase bone density as well as the trabecular bone volume and density

and decrease the levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in bone. Conclusion: Bushen Huatan decoction can effectly prevent osteoporosis in female rats induced by ovariectomy

and the mechanism maybe lowing levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in bone tissue.
