Objective: Study the change regulation on FTIR spectra of Codonopsis Radix before and after sulfur-fumigated process
and provide a basis for quality control of Codonopsis Radix. Method: Different quantities of sulfur were used to fumigate Codonopsis Radix. The powder
alcoholic and aqueous extracts of Codonopsis Radix before and after sulfur-fumigated processes were analyzed by FTIR
the further analysis was used by second derivative infrared spectroscopy. Result: Before and after sulfur-fumigated process
the difference of FTIR spectra was not obvious
while through high resolution of second derivative infrared spectroscopy the distinction was showed. The messages of infrared spectra are as follows:for powder of Codonopsis Radix
the height of absorption peaks in the range of 1 500-1 600 had obvious difference. And for alcoholic extract and aqueous extract
the same feature had appearance in the range of 1 500-1 600 cm-1
1 715 cm-1. The height of absorption peaks of powder of Codonopsis Radix had a regular change along with the quantity of sulfur. Conclusion: The change regulation on FTIR spectra before and after sulfur-fumigated process could be utilized to distinguish the Codonopsis Radix whether or not to be sulfur-fumigated
