Objective: To investigate the protective effects of extract from Polygonum cuspidatum on focal cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in rats. Method: SD rats were randomly divided into 6 groups: sham operated group
model group
nimodipine group (1 mg ·kg-1) and 3 groups treated with extract from P.cuspidatum (5
10
20 mg ·kg-1). The rat model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) was induced to observe the changes in cerebral function score
infarction area
water content
and histological modifications in rat brain. The levels of Interleukin-1β (IL-1β)
interleukin-6 (IL-6)
interleukin-8 (IL-8)
nitric oxide (NO) were also measured. Result: Extract from P.cuspidatum at different doses could obviously decrease the cerebral function score
infarction area and water content. It also alleviated the pathological injury of focal cerebral I/R injury in rats. For extract from P.cuspidatum groups
IL-1β
IL-6
IL-8 and NO in brain tissue were significantly decreased. Conclusion: Extract from P.cuspidatum has protective effects on cerebral I/R injury.
